As I mentioned earlier, the deadly cold that instantly destroys a catapult (and all of the opponent's units) is a great asset when defending a castle. Plus, cold spells have a good base damage regardless of the magic skill, and we also freeze the target. Your tactic works not only in the castle but also on fast-paced maps, where you have to do this. Of course, it depends on the opponent's faction in an open field. For example, it's not advantageous to engage in melee combat against Elves, either in the castle or elsewhere.
