Reasoning of the "maybe they'll give me something" variety is only justified when it is obvious (or highly likely) that the opponent will kick your ass if you come to them. In all other cases, it is a sign of low skill.

For me, it was obvious that by the time I reached my opponent with my turtle speed, he would either hole up in his Castle 5 times or go into a treasure zone and definitely gear up there (this has happened to me more than once). I needed magic and stats—neither of which were given in treasure zones/Dragon Utopias (except for the Pandora's box with fire). As for skill, go to the VT chat—there's someone there who loves talking about that all day :)
