I know five...

I know five modern-day heroes {By heroes, I mean people who managed to save other people's lives, possibly at the cost of their own. It would be better to name those you remember from the last 20 years based on media reports; if that's difficult, you can add heroes from the Great Patriotic War}.

Well, I guess I'll have to name them myself. I wouldn't want to "ruin" the topic. So:

1)
US Airways pilot Chesley Sullenberger became the author of the "Hudson miracle" in January 2009. At that time, birds flew into the engines of the plane he was piloting, which had 155 passengers on board. The pilot then decided to land the plane on the river. As a result, thanks to Sullenberger's successful actions, none of the people on board were injured. The pilot was honored by the media as a hero, and the incident was called the "Hudson miracle."
By the way, in March of this year, Chesley Sullenberger retired and ended his 30-year career as a pilot.

2) I was looking at the Wikipedia page about Sullenberger and found a direct link; I couldn't resist:

Shavarsh Vladimirovich Karapetyan is an 11-time world record holder, a 17-time world champion, a 13-time European champion, and a seven-time Soviet champion in underwater swimming.
On September 16, 1976, he happened to be at the scene of the incident while jogging in the morning and saved passengers from a trolleybus that had fallen into the Yerevan reservoir. At a depth of 10 meters, he broke the back window of the trolleybus with his feet and pulled out 20 passengers one by one. Karapetyan was one of the very few people on Earth who was physically capable of such a feat. The other passengers could not be saved. After that, Shavarsh Vladimirovich fell ill with pneumonia, which was complicated by sepsis. The severe illness ended in disability and the end of his sports career.

3) On March 11, 2003, Lieutenant Colonel Igor Yakunin died in the city of Kemerovo, covering a combat grenade with his body, which exploded during training at a training ground. The tragic incident occurred on March 4 during combat training at a training ground in the village of Mozzhukha in the Kemerovo region. A cadet from the training communications battalion of the internal troops, Denis Lobashov, dropped a grenade with the safety pin removed. The battalion commander, Lieutenant Colonel Igor Yakunin, saving his subordinates, covered it with his body.

4) Now, a story with a good ending...
"6 seconds to heroism"

On March 30, 2007, an emergency situation occurred at one of the training grounds in the Kaliningrad region. During training in throwing hand grenades, one grenade without a pin slipped out of a soldier's hands. But the young man was saved from certain death by his commander, who shielded him from the explosion with his body.

Training in throwing hand grenades was held at a training ground for ground and coastal troops of the Baltic Fleet. Major Dmitry Ostroverkhov led the process. Near the end of the training, 20-year-old Private Mirkhaydarov, who had recently been drafted from Bashkiria, dropped a grenade from which he had just pulled the pin. The soldier was stunned by the surprise. There were only 6 seconds left until the explosion. Major Dmitry Ostroverkhov pushed the private behind a protective barrier and covered him with his body. The fragments of the exploding grenade did not hit Mirkhaydarov. As a result of the explosion, Ostroverkhov received several leg wounds, and the private was only slightly frightened. The major lost about half a liter of blood from the wounds on his left leg and spent almost two days in intensive care.

5) A 15-year-old teenager from the Krasnoyarsk Territory received the medal "For Valor and Bravery in a Fire"
On February 5, Maxim Loktyushev from the village of Novotroitskoye, Sukhobuzimsky district, Krasnoyarsk Territory, pulled two children (4 and 5 years old) out of a burning house. The fire occurred when there were no adults at home. More details.
