It seems like anyone who inserts the letter "e" into the word "девушка" is just embarrassed to write the regular word.

This all stems from lowbrow origins. Could a modern "пацан" say the word "девушка" in "high society"? Absolutely not.
Society does impose its own rules and habits, and it takes time to break free from them. "ДЭвушки" is largely a stage of escaping from terms like "баба," "телка," and other slang.
