Allow me to clarify, unburnable Qwerty :) I think the conversation was actually about a long game on large maps. There's an opinion that in a long game, mages will be dominant. In an army exchange in multiplayer, a mage can quickly restore mana and strike at the remnants of the enemy force.
This is not entirely true. Firstly, there are red spheres and cloaks of defiance that usually leave the mage with no chance. Secondly, a warrior usually develops faster and has a greater chance of taking valuable objects like dungeons earlier; whether the mage will catch up later is unknown. And in general, as one smart person said, it's much harder to turn a warrior into a mage than the other way around.
