Just as death is a part of life, war is a part of development. Imagine a world where no one fights, gets sick, or dies. How long would it take for an overpopulation crisis to begin? How long would it take for a crisis of boredom and indifference to begin? Death makes life worth living, and love makes it worth dying for. To perish in an unequal battle is far less frightening than to dissolve and disappear into a single, well-fed, content, and happy mass. It's easy to reason about such things while living in Moscow, but from Siberia, everything looks somewhat different and more frightening.
