Or here’s another option, try watching Miyazaki’s cartoons. It’s not anime, but it’s still a simple cartoon, but it’s still interesting and far from stupid.

You might as well say "Sailor Moon." My brain could only handle 5-6 episodes of THIS when I was 8 years old. I still remember the plot:
Villain: Okay, I need to mess with these humans *plots something*
*Sailor Moon and her friends hang out where the villain is plotting*
*the villain’s plots manifest*
Sailor Moon and her friends: We’re cool, we’re spouting nonsense... Uh, of course, we’re bringing retribution in the name of the Moon! MAAAACHI KAZLOV!!!
*the villain’s friends wave away the mini-skirts*
*Sailor Moon cries*
*Tuxedo Mask appears*
Tuxedo Mask: Sailor Moon, take down the jerk!
Sailor Moon: Hyper-mega-super-duper-cool-definitely-lunar attack, jerk, get ready!
*the jerk gets taken down and self-destructs*
*Tuxedo Mask leaves*
*Sailor Moon and her friends continue hanging out*
