what is its purpose?

So that the church can use quotes from it to impose the image of thinking that it needs on the masses. This way of thinking should bring power and wealth to the church.

does God actually exist?

It is impossible to prove or disprove the existence of God, therefore, everyone has the right to decide whether to believe in him or not.
