Well, I don't know, I'm currently playing the unofficial add-on "Return" for Gothic, and they've made it incredibly hardcore, and it's more interesting to me). Although, maybe it's because I've already played Gothic 1 and Gothic 2A like 100500100500 times, so I'm used to it).

I don't think it's something as cheesy as immortality in GTA. It probably just unlocks access to armor and a companion in a specific location.
Yeah, it's just bonuses, it makes things easier.
But if there's a quest for them, a difficult one, and they offer something unique and special, then it could be interesting.
