Yes, the second installment felt more well-thought-out; there was no excessive pomposity, no overly exposed elves (or if there were, it wasn't in such large quantities), demons remained demons, undead remained undead, elves remained elves, and even though the units were somewhat uniform, each one was unique in its own way. Thirdly, it seems they focused too much on commercial appeal. I don't like the demons with human faces in the new game (this also appeared in the second game, but at least the horned ones were still horned!), the tons of scantily clad elves, and other such delights. It's interesting to see what they've done, but that's all.
