It's like sacrificing your last cookie and treating a friend, while you drink tea without anything.

Only on a slightly different scale. And the situation is different – because of this, no one will benefit (in your case – from the cookie). No matter how you look at it, it's not reasonable. You lose everything just because of lousy patriotic beliefs.
However, I don't believe that anyone can be so foolish as to act like that.
