Yes, sometimes it happens when both sides are bad, and there are no good ones. Even so, many people were killed in the USSR, intelligent and educated people, not just some riffraff.

In general, if we consider political motives, each side believes itself to be pure and righteous, and everyone else is "evil." Only in alliances are these nuances overlooked, and allies are attributed the position of "supporters of light."
After World War I, the United States became a superpower, even though it entered the war last, when the countries of the Entente were clearly winning. The political system of the United States corresponded to the views of the leading European powers. The "Western world" became dependent on the United States...
The Russian Empire, due to internal revolution, could not last even a year, and there were huge human losses. And for this blunder (the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk), the country lost part of its Eastern European territories, and Finland and Poland gained independence. The Bolshevik communists who came to power spread a socialist system, which was undesirable for bankers, counts, and businessmen – the highest economic elite of the Western powers, which is why the USSR was simply refused recognition. If the system had been pro-Western, Russia might have continued to participate in further politics...
In 1933, the National Socialists came to power in Germany, a political system that was something between Western and Eastern political systems... Despite the fact that Germany ceased to comply with all the conditions of the peace settlement, it rapidly increased its military power and annexed the territories of Austria and part of Czechoslovakia, which had previously been declared independent. The West made these huge "concessions" because they believed that Hitler's propaganda and his hatred of Slavs and, in particular, Russians would eventually lead to a war against the USSR, which they disliked... Poland, which was a buffer zone but received military support from France and England, was not protected; this was simply ignored because Hitler's "direction" was correct – towards the USSR. And the USSR was immediately declared the main enemy after the invasion of Finland, and preparations were already underway for a landing in Norway to conduct an operation against the USSR. Then Hitler preferred to attack the main enemies of Germany in World War I – France and England... But what would have happened if Germany had continued its expansion to the East? England and France would have joined the Reich... The USSR did not interfere because it had also suffered from the Treaty of Versailles after World War I... Western propaganda posters proclaimed the bloody alliance of world evil in the form of Nazi Germany and Stalinist USSR, despite the USSR's neutrality...
And then Hitler made a fatal mistake, not squeezing everything out of Western Europe, and attacked the USSR. As a result, Socialists and Capitalists united, the long-suffering Russian people, and the allies sympathized with each other, and the "army of Light" defeated evil. At the same time, as long as Japan, a member of the Axis (Germany, Japan, Italy, etc.), did not attack the United States, they generally did not care that the infrastructure of Europe was collapsing and millions were dying...
Two years after the victory (they called it a rest), the Cold War began because the United States and England could not accept that communists and socialists had become so influential in world politics... The West quickly formed NATO, the USSR learned about this, inquired, and offered its membership – but was refused, saying that they did not need such a policy... In the West, the USSR transformed from the long-suffering Russian people into a mighty "evil empire"...
In general, in the end, money and influence rule the ball – that is, an even greater opportunity to get even more money... Western politics is obvious in this regard; I don't know about the USSR. One thing is clear: the West does not want to be content with a smaller piece if it always has the largest piece on the menu.
