Ta(t)t(a)uin (Arabic: تطاوين; transliteration variants: Tatooine, Tatwin, Tatawin, as well as Fum(m)-Tattaouin, etc.) is a city in southern Tunisia, the administrative center of the Tataouine Governorate.
The city's attractions include local ksours (fortified Berber granaries), including Ksar Ouled Sultan, Chenini, and Douiret. Currently, the settlements with mud-brick architecture, where these granaries were located, are abandoned.
Tataouine became famous thanks to the film by J. Lucas, "Star Wars," which was filmed in various locations in Tunisia, including Tataouine itself, "in honor" of which the planet Tatooine was named. However, most of the landscapes of the alien Tatooine were filmed in another city, Matmata.
