The Barbarian Castle shouldn't be considered weak; it has a 130% balanced start without a Dungeon. Starting as Tyrus, you get 35+ gold and wolves on the first day, plus a nice option to buy a creature on days 112-113, which is definitely not insignificant. Ivor can't compare to this, unless he gets lucky with elf spawns. With roughly equal development, Tyrus will dominate in an early encounter.

However, starting as Gurn is a handicap for the opponent, as is starting as Bron in the Swamp.
