I'd like to share some practical experience. In reality, viruses themselves aren't as scary as the system's vulnerability to them. The newer the operating system, the fewer problems with viruses. The other day, my boss insisted on installing a licensed Windows XP on the company's computers (we had an old, but completely legal, copy). After three days of hellish troubleshooting (I tried everything I could, including licensed Kaspersky and other antivirus software), I couldn't revive the system; it crashed 99% (it twitches occasionally and sometimes responds to clicks, but it's essentially dead). I gave up, installed a custom-built assembly by Zverev, and it works perfectly without any antivirus software. So, that's the story...
