Alright, I'll tell you briefly :)
I joined the army at 18, right after school. I served for 1.5 years.
For the first six months, I served in the motorized rifle troops in the city of Slavyansk on the Kuban (Krasnodar Territory). After six months, a group of guys (including me) were selected and transferred to the 102nd Military Base. This is in Armenia, in the city of Leninakan. (I should note that 19 people were sent from our unit, and almost 200 people were gathered from all units.) We arrived in Yerevan, and several guys were immediately taken to the Air Force (not to fly, of course, but to the "security team" to guard the airport). The rest were taken to a unit in Yerevan. About 50 people remained there. And the rest (about 100 of us) were sent to Leninakan (now it's called Gyumri). There, everyone was assigned to different branches. They asked me:
- Do you have a driver's license?
- No
- Then what the hell were you doing in the motorized rifle troops?
- I don't know, I was taken to the unit by a different team, I replied.
- I see.
Right in front of everyone, they assigned people to reconnaissance, tankers, communications, infantry, repair battalion, artillery regiment, anti-aircraft gunners, and only 6 of us remained. Me and one other former motorized rifleman (although he had a driver's license), 2 special forces soldiers (from the 10th Spetsnaz Brigade of the GRU, based in Molkino), and an engineer.
An officer came up, read our names, and said: "You guys will serve in the Engineer-Sapper Company." :eek:
And that's how I ended up serving in the Engineer Troops. I was assigned to the position of sapper.
