For example, someone gets +6 to all stats, and you get... well, let's just say less impressive items, in a hypothetical scenario. You lose, and then your opponent starts telling you how badly you played. Even though you think that anyone in your position would have lost with that set of items, and it's obvious. This irritates you, right? Why does he start lecturing you when anyone would have lost in that situation?
In *The Tournament*, they'll give you something useful, so the one who plays worse will lose, not the one who got bad items. And if you win, not many will say you played badly :)
