During the reign of the Great Mughals, Agra was considered the capital of the empire, along with Delhi, which had reached its peak by that time. According to tradition, it was decided to build the structure in the suburbs, on the banks of the Jamuna. The location was chosen remarkably well, and so far, no earthquake has caused significant damage to the mausoleum. The building was constructed over 22 years, and more than twenty thousand people were gathered from all over the country for the construction. The chief architect, Isa Khan, was given unlimited authority, and he justified the trust placed in him. Marble was brought from a unique Rajput quarry, 300 kilometers away. According to legend, foreign architects – a Venetian and a Frenchman – were involved in the construction, but their names have not survived.
