yesterday played with Alex the Great on SoD smk. In one generation, we both got level 7 dwellings—my giants external dwelling was guarded by 47 upgraded wolves, his drakes dwelling by 26 upgraded minotaurs. I don't quite understand the logic :)

In one game, my fire bird external dwelling was guarded by 105 Orc Chieftains, and Vikk had about 60 upgraded griffins; both are equivalent to 26 upgraded minotaurs. And 47 upgraded dogs are 3 times weaker. Apparently, this means the giants external dwelling is "highly valued"... But unlikely!
Also for reference. own same-//Scorp's devil external dwelling is guarded by 43 dendroids, which also corresponds to the "norm". But I played with Dream recently, and his monster external dwelling was guarded by 20-49 upgraded lizards, which is somewhere around wolves... So you can't figure it out without a bottle :D
