As an alternative:
If the killer leaves a clue, i.e., invents it himself, then it remains even if the murder fails. Perhaps Amaranth tried to kill you, but the doctor healed you. The clue remained in the end. I just don't quite understand what the pointed ear has to do with him.
1) Clues are never false.

The healer would have healed me after the murder... but I had a guest, and the killer was afraid to come in... i.e., everything suggests that the captain was protecting me.
