We played by the same rules as in the group. The spawn was decent - 2 external dwellings of behemoths and a bunch of hives, but almost no gold placed. The distances were considerable, including off-road marches, but I had to make do with the starting 8 heroes. Which is exactly what decided the game - a 2-day lag behind the opponent is an unacceptable luxury for Jebus Cross.
In the end, through heroic efforts and millimeter-precise chains (good thing we played without a time control), I managed to gather all the good stuff - 2 external behemoth dwellings, 1 of hounds, 1 of dogs, 2 of gnolls, and also build up my main and secondary town to behemoths.
What's more, everything came together on the last moves - the papa entered a nagabank, where he got level 7 and gold for the second behemoth dwelling. That's where we saved.
I approached the continuation in a scattered state, which immediately affected the quality of play - first the chain failed (I took an auto), then dragons thinned out the wolves at the scout hero (I took an auto), but when I went to the center with 11 behemoths, 34 Wyverns, and 160 wolves, and there the GO handed me my head (even though it was supposed to be cleared with losses of only singles), it felt just too shameful to ask for a third auto.
However, the post-mortem revealed that the opponent had already gutted 4 Dragon Utopias, so the army advantage and having 2 mass spells still wouldn't have helped.
Thanks for the game!
