Whoever presses that button considers themselves one of the world's greatest masochists, on a global scale. There's always a chance of a response, and it's a significant one. Launching a nuclear missile could trigger a conflict that would cause immense damage to the state that initiated the launch. I don't even need to mention all the other dangers leading to the extinction of humanity. There may be quite a few inadequate people in government, but there probably aren't that many complete idiots. Overall, I think a nuclear war won't happen in the foreseeable future. It's interesting to think about what will happen in 50 years when the oil runs out. Although, I doubt they won't find an alternative; we are living in an era of technological and industrial progress.
