I have a question: were griffons the only guards? Or were there others?
If it was only griffons, then it's definitely an exploit. Whether or not to demand a restart depends on your relationship with the opponent. If you respect the opponent, load the save and let's go again.

P.S.: If your situation is worse, demand a restart :D
