Yes, trolls have high damage output. But the Necropolis faction never had many archers. And liches are among the strongest units in the game. The fact that they attack in an area is a plus against archers, who are always protected. And you can always protect your liches with skeletons and mummies. So vampires + dragons + liches = power.
