ASR (Arabic: عص‎‎) is the afternoon (pre-evening) Muslim prayer. It consists of four rak'ahs of fard. It is the third of the five obligatory prayers. These five prayers together constitute the second pillar of Islam. Asr consists of four rak'ahs and is recited silently. According to some madhhabs, the number of rak'ahs may be reduced to two. The Asr prayer is mentioned in the Quran (2:238), and it is also the name of a short surah (Al-Asr). This foundation places the Asr prayer in a higher position, especially on Fridays.
