What if, for example, you get a total of 32 creatures for a Castle, plus about 20 Marks and about 15 Gnolls from a second hero?

That army is enough to take a max-level Crypt without losses with any hero, even without magic! When playing as Castle, I try not to upgrade Archers to level 1, but instead get Cavaliers to level 4. That's why I don't hesitate to go into the Crypt even with basic Archers; the only thing is to have around 50 Pikemen, and they'll tear it apart! ;)
