Because the only difference between it and the Secret Crystal is its size and the amount of mana it provides at the level it's obtained.

The "deadly cold" skill helps to defeat Barghests - any attack takes away at least one life, i.e., it doesn't matter that lightning deals only 300 damage; it will still kill a Barghest with 1300 health.

By the way, it won't always kill one Barghest. If there's not enough magic, they will have some health left. I checked. ;)
