Although the article is poorly written (that's typical of sensationalist journalism), it contains some truth. Anime is aimed at a young audience that hasn't yet found its place in life. This style is popular because of its simple ways of expressing emotions. This is why there's so much mindless imitation, just like the imitation of the humor of Comedy Club.
