vlsvetik, if it's too difficult, install any patch (preferably 1.5 or 1.6) or reduce the difficulty level. Patch 1.6 requires a bug fix. I haven't played version 1.0 myself, but I know that the patches weakened Gilraen.

In any version, I don't recommend capturing the nearest castle right away. After capturing it, a large number of neutral Druids will start appearing on the map. Some of them may join the enemy.
