And it's not necessary to give more to others than you give to yourself – if you're a Jedi, taking down a couple of mercenaries shouldn't be a problem for you, right? (a bit cynical, but the idea is clear). Not to mention that you can draw strength from this (I got this idea from Kotor 2), because compassion makes the person you're helping stronger, and it makes you stronger, because you're realizing your potential, seeing the manifestation of your power (in the same way, Sith see their power in destruction).
Compassion is the Jedi's greatest weapon and the Sith's worst enemy.
