Regarding fiction, I'll first browse the book, read the annotation, and the table of contents, and then either read it or not even start.
But when it comes to various technical/scientific books, reference books/guides/textbooks/encyclopedias, I'll say that such books are rarely and shouldn't be read from cover to cover. In such books, only the necessary/interesting information is read, which is taken in pieces from anywhere in the book. Although, there have been times when I had to read such books completely in this way, it takes quite a long time, but this method is very effective for learning.
P.S. By the way, Vistrit, I suspect that this is exactly how you should read your
HUGE encyclopedia about computing machines... it's unclear who it was written for... 1200 pages
- they couldn't have written 1200 pages just for fun - that's what an encyclopedia is for - there's probably a lot of useful information that can be learned from it.
