I sincerely sympathize with players who have to deal with such prices. Is there such a rip-off in Ukraine? I bought the Platinum Edition (i.e., the complete version of Heroes 1, 2, and 3) a year and a half ago for 250 rubles. That's a little over 10 bucks now, and it was even less back then, but it wasn't a DVD, just 3 discs.

I have no idea what it's like in Ukraine. But here in Siberia, three and a half years ago, I bought a licensed Platinum Edition 3 on 3 CDs for 200 rubles (about 7 dollars at the time), but I recently saw a new release somewhere for 350-400 (that's already around 15 dollars). I won't even talk about the fifth installment. The latest release, I think it's the Gold Edition, costs 700 rubles in some stores. The cheapest price I've seen here is 570 rubles. Even I was taken aback.

You are a little mistaken here. The English version 1.0 (DOS) and the Russian version 1.1 (Windows) differ. This is actually logical. Heroes 2 DOS and Windows, and Heroes 3 3.1 and 3.2 also differ.
The English Windows version 1.1 is practically no different from the Russian 1.1 (Heroes 1). Practically. Except for one significant detail - the terrain on the battlefield. It's just different. And blaming the developers of the English original for this difference is at least absurd. The blame lies only with the localizers, who, by simply translating the game, changed one of its components.

Again. Just to dispel any suspicion of my hatred for Бука. I will say that I fully support the decision to play the first game only on Бука 1.1. Since the English 1.1 is not widely available in Russia, and probably not in the CIS, there will be no loss of quorum. The situation is completely different in the second and third games.
