By the way, I can't find complete statistics on the USSR's performance anywhere.
For example, on the main website about the Olympics, there are statistics on performances since 1896, and...
...the USA has 2100+ medals in its history (almost 900 of them gold)
The British have 660+ medals
Australia has 386
The Chinese have 320+ medals, including this Olympics, but only since 1984!!!
Russia has 248 medals from 1996-2004
Ukraine has 70 medals from 1996-2004
But nothing is said about the USSR (it is only mentioned a couple of times in the records)
Statistics are only kept from 1996 for the separated countries (even 1992 is not counted :confused:)
P.S. By the way, Michael Phelps won one of his gold medals by beating the second-place finisher by one hundredth of a second... it's not a fact that everything was fair :) sometimes even the "photo finish" devices make mistakes when it's really needed, and it's impossible to see such a thing visually...
