Yeah, that also plays a significant role. For example, it's not for nothing that it's said that the Warrior is the best at wielding spirits of rage, because he has an "exclusive" ability that allows him to increase the rage growth by 100% (at max level). Each class has 2 unique abilities, one at the very beginning of the development tree, and the second at the very end :) But in reality, runes give a lot of abilities that aren't specific to a class, and you can quite successfully develop magic for a Warrior, for example. However, the "native" skill tree will still develop faster.
P.S. I really liked the Paladin's skill tree. There are a lot of useful abilities, such as reserve slots; they are truly unique, while the Warrior and Mage's abilities are more specialized, in a way.
