They are certainly mainstream... :) But that's not exactly what I meant. My dislike for elves has deeper roots.
It started with Tolkien's grandfather. Let me explain why:
1) Elves live longer than everyone else (and not just in Tolkien's works). Therefore, they are the smartest, the wisest (and not just in "The Lord of the Rings," but always and everywhere)... It's banal and boring.
Wow, you really went off on a tangent! Have you read anything besides Tolkien? Read "The Witcher" by Andrzej Sapkowski, or "Night Watch" by Sergei Lukyanenko; by the way, in that book, dwarves were the first to invent electricity! And... well, never mind, in many books, elves are portrayed as a morally and genetically aging race that is forced to go somewhere to make room for humans. They should be pitied.
I don't like (I think I've written this somewhere before) - mages, undead, demons, orcs, and, strangely enough, light elves. :D
