It does carry weight. However, I can't think of any major 20th-century conflict where religious differences were the primary cause (not just a pretext).

I would describe such people, as you described, not as fanatics of their church, but as people with a mind so unbalanced that it borders on insanity. After all, their actions certainly contradict their religion.
