then you clearly haven't seen that the first and second or the first and third places won't meet until the final, and only the first and fourth can meet in the semi-finals, and the third and second – and even that is unlikely in practice...

The point is that players from the same group already have the opportunity to determine each other's strength and put them in the 1-4 finals again – this is pointless because it's much more interesting for the participants themselves to play against a larger number of opponents – rather than playing against the same one.
