I hope Mephisto won't be offended if I answer this question :)
Simas, we decided to limit the drawing to hero-related themes. You can draw a unit if you want. I think many people will draw units :) Regarding drawing multiple units, I think it's possible if they are connected by some common storyline. (so that it's still one drawing, and not several on one sheet)
Regarding the second point: what do you mean by "not from the Heroes universe"? :) If it's some abstract background, then please go ahead. And if you're talking about it needing to look harmonious, then why not?
P.S. We talked to Mephisto in ICQ about the contest. As soon as he has time, he will create a topic in the "Contests" section, where he will post all the information about it, including the participant table. On June 10th (if Mephisto doesn't decide to change anything, after all, he's the organizer), the drawings will be posted, and the contest will begin :)

O God of Earth and Altar,
Bow down and hear our cry,
Our earthly rulers falter,
Our people drift and die,
The walls of gold entomb us,
The swords of scorn divide,
Take not thy thunder from us,
Take away our pride.
G.K. Chesterton: English Hymnal
