I also agree about the elven archers; they are indeed helpless in melee combat, as well as when affected by the "Confusion" spell, but overall they are very good (unless both of these factors are present in the battle). You could even call them one of the best archer units (again, if you ignore their low resistance and meager health). And just a note, Nightmares are level 5 creatures.
