There's always a sawmill nearby, and if you wait a bit, wood accumulates (and neutral creatures also have wood). Leveling up doesn't seem to be particularly difficult on un-upgraded ranged units. However, later on, with druids and leveled-up ranged units, it becomes much easier, but this tactic might not suit everyone.
