In the movie, the Jedi Council is actually quite wise...
But of course, no one disputes Palpatine's genius ;).
By the way, if Qui-Gon Jinn had listened to the Jedi Council and abandoned the boy immediately, Palpatine wouldn't have achieved anything.

I wouldn't say... Qui-Gon Jinn is one of the few normal Jedi who thinks for himself and makes decisions independently, while the council is foolish, arrogant, and selfish... they don't actually care about the slavery on Tatooine and that the boy, who is a concentration of the Force, might die as a slave or be found by the Sith and raised by them... There's a very striking scene in the 3rd episode where Yoda urges Anakin to let go, to let Padmé die... Where is the humanity in that?) The Jedi have essentially turned into ordinary soldiers who simply have to follow orders...
Obi-Wan, by the way, didn't inherit Qui-Gon's charm or intelligence... The Jedi are supposed to save people, but what did he do - he entered into a battle, cutting down Anakin, without even trying to properly explain things to him... Even I would have found the right words in that situation...
