What's wrong with a rifle? You can install an optical sight, or you can choose not to; it costs next to nothing, what's the problem?
And if we're being serious, buy a canister of pepper spray and keep it so that you can pull it out at ANY moment...Ideally, keep your hand on it while walking down the street, without removing it + practice at home with someone on quickly pulling it out when someone attacks you from behind. IMHO, it's a useful thing.
