The AI is great! I don't often set it higher than veteran. In Heroes 3, I always set it to the maximum, but even that wasn't enough, and here it's truly intelligent. Heroes 5 is great for single-player, and what's a single-player game without good AI (since you can't play with people) and a good story? And Heroes 5 has both!
