Cthulhu is a descendant of Leviathan, who is depicted in the Bible as a "serpent, twisting, a sea monster" (I think it's in the book of the prophet Isaiah).
In Hell, Leviathan is considered the secretary for marine affairs, as Satan appointed him chief over all the waters.

Could it be... is he from our infernal brotherhood? Oh, the horror... every family has its black sheep... :D
