Life in general is a harsh thing.
...I'm thoroughly enjoying playing the first X-COM.
What a wonderful game. They don't make them like that anymore:(
So, I established my first base somewhere in the Emirates, so that its range of operations would cover Europe, where the largest number of countries funding me are located. I named it affectionately, poetically, and with a hidden meaning - Cadia.
I'm playing on Superhuman difficulty, 8 out of 8, so I only managed to shoot down one UFO.
The others either fled or landed; in the latter case, I captured them warm and undamaged.
I've been on a couple of Terror missions, and in one of them, I only managed to shoot down Sectoids and a Cyberdisk, while all the innocent civilians were killed :-(
At that time, there were some problems with supplies and money, so I had to take down the Cyberdisk with three soldiers, and, most sadly, with laser pistols. And this was at a gas station; one miss, and half the squad would be gone. So, I couldn't use grenades, and I only had one anyway. But I managed it in the end.
Then, after I developed the personal armor, the blue one, it became easier. A soldier could even survive a couple of plasma shots without getting injured, just losing HP or falling unconscious.
Well, when money started coming in from selling artifacts on the black market, I immediately established a second base - in southern Africa, because that's where the land is cheapest.
I named the base Forge, for its purpose. The staff consists of only 45 people, 40 engineers and 5 soldiers. And there are only 5 cells/compartments: living quarters, a warehouse, a workshop, a radar, and an airlock.
The engineers work day and night, tirelessly producing laser cannons for the fighters. The production cost is enormous, but the profit from the sale is obvious.
And the five soldiers are just a garrison. They have nothing, not even armor. Their only equipment is a laser rifle, which is good because, like all laser technology, it doesn't require ammunition.
It's like the Imperial Guard protecting the world-forge:)
They have nothing, only a lasgun and a prayer to the Emperor:)
True, the guards have helmets and armor, but mine are only in uniform jumpsuits, but that's okay)
We'll make it through
