The defenders at the fortress... what should we do with them?

I also don't like dwarves because of their runes... just lost to a dwarf! Imagine the situation... five of my units are surrounding the Jarl, the dwarf casts some kind of rune... I don't remember the name, but basically it hits everyone around in a chain and a couple of times with luck... I was shocked! :(
