Degradation is hardly a better option than self-destruction; moreover, a degraded person will do one of two things:
1) Try to develop again – a dead-end option, as resources will be almost or completely depleted by that time – this will result in a feeling of dissatisfaction, rebellions (against what? against everything!), suicides, and other things that will push the person even further away.
2) Continue to quietly and peacefully degrade. By the way, if you think about it, a degraded person is most likely to die in extremely unfavorable environmental conditions (emissions into the atmosphere, resource problems, etc.).
Where do we go? Where do we end up when we save the world?
