It's simply that the time has passed when the main focus was on appearance, and wannabes wanted to shock ordinary people with their created image. I think a green mohawk or a red star on your head won't surprise anyone anymore – if you watch TV during stupid concerts, you'll see "individuals" with "icicles" (for those who don't know, "icicles" is the hairstyle of Gorshok from Korol i Shut, and earlier, one of the musicians from the band Purgen had a similar hairstyle). Today, you can easily not notice a modern metalhead in a crowd; and it's not that everyone has gotten used to it, it's just that metalheads have started dressing differently (for example, about 7 years ago, I was walking down the street in combat boots, ripped blue jeans with chains and patches, in a leather jacket (covered in studs, pins, chains, and badges), with a mohawk on my head), and when I passed two women with strollers, one said to the other (I still remember these words): "God forbid my son grows up to be like that."
Now I look completely different (pants, shirts, I cut my hair 3.5 years ago). But I haven't stopped listening to metal; in fact, I've moved on to heavier, darker music.
