First, a person opens up, and if they drink more, they start to flatter (sometimes), and if they drink even more, they start to behave like a pig and say ABSOLUTELY everything that's on their mind, and that's almost certainly even more unpleasant to listen to than flattery.
As for Russian culture and the tradition of gatherings around the table, I also liked what you said. But I would call it not romance, but rather comfort. It's a warm atmosphere where no one gets completely drunk. In my opinion, that's the only acceptable way to drink vodka.
