The only flaw in your tactic is that while you're building a large army, a Warlock will come and wipe everything out with spells.

This is true if the game is fast-paced; in that case, offensive spells are always stronger than an army. But if it's a late-game scenario, then magic becomes less effective. It all depends on the circumstances.
